~ 2011 Open Hunt ~

The day started quite cool, cloudy and wet, but in a matter of a few hours the sun came out and started to warm up everything in sight. LIttle did we know that it would not stay that way for very long. The sun only lasted a couple of hours then decided to go back behind the clouds for the remainder of the day.

The clouds took over and brought with it a cold front that would make the day interesting. During the last two hunts the wind began to blow, but that didn't deter those who gathered to find buried treasure. By the end of the day everyone had a wind burn to show for their efforts working the "Fields of Coins and Tokens". When it was all over just about everyone was cold, weary and ready to go home.

After another year of preparation and hard work our club has completed another very successful Open Hunt.

We had three large hunt fields covering the entire area of Onset Beach, from Shell Point to the pier. Our club President, Ron, was the M.C. for the day, and our Hunt Master was club founder and Treasurer Roy. There were plenty of hidden coins and prize tokens in the sand to go around for everyone.

We had plenty of prize tokens for those who were lucky enough to find them. We try to come up with unique tokens to plant at the hunt each year. This prevents those who try to make copies of tokens at home and bring them to a hunt claiming to have found them, just so they can claim a prize. Our tokens this year were quite unique. They included casino poker chips, pins, an ear ring and even a house number.

Our prize selection this year was quite well received. Rather than giving away a metal detector or two we chose to give out cash. Most people that have attended our hunts in the past said they really didn't want to win a detector as they already had one or more at home and didn't need any more. With that in mind the club membership voted on new prize selections. In each field there would be one $300.00 grand prize and two $100.00 prize winners. There were also tokens buried for various collectable commerative coin sets, head phones, memberships to a discount club, free one year subscription to Western & Eastern magazine, free entries to next years hunt, and smaller cash prizes.

There were also tokens buried for three very special Treasure Chests. These are not any ordinary treasure chests as they were hand made by two of our club members Jeannie and Earl who make these chests for us each year specifically for our open hunt. Thank you Jeannie and Earle for your generous donation. Each chest contained treasure of coins and/or folding money.

This year we also had a Pirates Treasure Chest. This was the idea of club member Patrick M. who brought in the treasure chest and also filled it with the treasure. But before you could claim the treasure chest you had to use a treasure map so you would look like a pirate. Thank you Patrick as this was well received.

We would like to give a very large "Thank You" to Stephen M. who so generously donated many many commerative coin sets that were given as prizes this year. Thank You Stephen!

We would like to thank Outdoor Outfitters for their donation of six sets of headphones.

We would like to thank Western & Eastern Treasure Magazine for their gifts of One Year Free Subscriptions and for the case of magazines that they sent so each participant could have a copy.

Soon we will be starting the preparations for next years hunt, but before that happens we would like to thank all the members who worked in any way and in many ways to help bring this years event to its great conclusion. Thank You for your help.

We would especially like to thank all those who came from near and far to participate in this years hunt. We hope you had a good time and look forward to seeing you back again for next year's hunt.

Here are the pictures of those lucky enough to find the tokens for this years major prizes. For those prizes who's tokens were not found in the field they were given away at the end of the hunt. Each participant was given a ticket with a number on it. A corresponding ticket was placed in a bucket. When all participants had a ticket the drawing started and continued until all the prizes were given out.
